Sexual assault is a traumatic event that can have severe and complex psychological consequences. Often, these consequences develop into a chronic condition known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). Post-trauma means a severe impairment in quality of life and daily functioning, sometimes to the extent of difficulty functioning independently.
The hostels are intended for women who are survivors of sexual trauma and who are experiencing mental health crises and/or dealing with post-traumatic symptoms that impair their daily functioning. Treatment in these hostels aims to stabilize post-traumatic symptoms, practice self-regulation and coping skills, and improve overall functioning alongside the trauma.
Currently, there are three dedicated hostels for survivors of sexual trauma operating in Israel: Beit Ela, Beit Inbal, and Beit Yahav. The hostels are operated by the Inbalim Association under the supervision of the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security. The stay and treatment at the hostels are provided free of charge.
What is special about the rehabilitation hostels for survivors of sexual trauma?
The support offered by these hostels is specifically designed for treating survivors of sexual trauma. The staff consists only of women, and the treatment and stay protocols are trauma-informed. They are intended for acute mental health crises requiring intensive intervention.
The hostels are designed as a home-like setting, unlike psychiatric hospitalization frameworks. In addition to stabilizing symptoms, the treatment emphasizes rehabilitative and functional aspects to assist in returning to the community. Residents participate in household chores and can continue to take part in activities outside the hostel, such as work, studies, or community treatment.
What is the difference between the hostels?
Beit Ela Hostel focuses on short-term treatment, whereas Beit Inbal and Beit Yahav offer long-term treatment.
Beit Ela Hostel
Located in Be’er Yaakov, it offers short-term treatment—approximately four months—including therapeutic activities aimed at stabilizing mental state and post-traumatic symptoms, practicing self-regulation and coping skills, and providing security and assistance for community reintegration.
The stay includes housing, food, individual and group therapy, and psychiatric follow-up (as needed). Depending on the condition and personalized treatment plan, some activities can continue in the community during the stay at Beit Ela.
Beit Inbal and Beit Yahav Hostels
Beit Inbal is located in Be’er Yaakov, and Beit Yahav in Kfar Yona. Both provide long-term treatment.
The stay at Beit Inbal and Beit Yahav lasts about a year and a half. Treatment includes trauma processing, stabilization of post-traumatic symptoms, and practicing self-regulation skills. Additionally, they offer broader life skills training aimed at enabling independent functioning—managing a household, daily routine, workforce integration, and more.
The stay provides housing, food, individual and group therapy, medical and psychiatric follow-up, and builds a rehabilitative infrastructure for returning to community life.
Is there a cost for staying and treatment at the hostels?
No. The hostels operate under the supervision of the Ministry of Welfare, and all treatment services are provided free of charge.
How long does the stay at the hostels last?
Beit Ela offers a short-term framework, usually lasting 3-4 months.
Beit Inbal and Beit Yahav offer longer-term rehabilitation, lasting about a year and a half.
